The staff at the Probate Court office are professional and courteous, even friendly. The office is on the third floor (Suite 340) of the Cherokee County Justice Center at 90 North Street in Canton. They have a seperate window for Business, Firearm, and other licenses.

After you fill out the application, the clerk will check your identification and have you put your right index fingerprint on the application. This portion of the application will become your permit. The clerk collects $15 cash or money order for the Cherokee County Probate Court and a seperate $24 money order made out to GBI. The clerk then gives you the fingerprint cards and sends you to the Cherokee County Jail (Chattin Rd, just off Univeter Rd) for prints.

At the jail the Deputies at the front are very professional and take you into the fingerprinting room just inside the metal detector). I was not charged a fee for the prints but that was over five years ago, it may have changed.

Finally, you take your fingerprint cards back to the Probate Court for processing and wait 60 days for your GFL to arrive by mail.

The renewal process is incredibly easy. I went to the Probate Court on a Tuesday, filled out the application, put my right index fingerprint on the card, and paid the $15 fee. The clerk told me the renewal process would take two to four weeks. I received my new GFL on Friday of the same week.
